Tools, Materials, and Prep Checklist

Executing a successful roofing installation requires appropriate safety equipment, heavy-duty tools, and reliable underlying weather barriers. Whether you complete the installation yourself or hire a professional contractor, reviewing this checklist helps you verify that your team follows standard practices set by the National Roofing Contractors Association.

Safety and Demolition Gear: OSHA-compliant fall protection harnesses, shock-absorbing lanyards, heavy-duty roof anchors, and adjustable roof staging brackets ($150 to $300). Specialized shingle tear-off shovels with serrated teeth, pry bars, magnetic nail sweepers, and protective tarps ($120 to $250).

Structural Decking Supplies: Exterior-grade 5/8-inch CDX plywood or oriented strand board (OSB) sheets ($35 to $65 per 4×8 sheet installed) to replace water-damaged sheathing. Hot-dipped galvanized 8d ring-shank nails to re-secure loose deck boards.

Underlayment and Weather Membranes: Self-adhering rubberized asphalt ice and water shield membranes ($90 to $150 per roll covering 200 square feet) for eaves and valleys. High-performance synthetic underlayment rolls ($80 to $120 per 1,000 square feet) to cover remaining decking.

Flashing Profiles and Fasteners: Corrosion-resistant aluminum drip edge strips ($10 to $18 per 10-foot piece), aluminum step flashing ($1.00 to $3.00 per linear foot), and galvanized coil roofing nails ($35 to $50 per 50-pound box).

Preparation and Site Logistics: Secure municipal building permits ($150 to $500). Rent a 20-yard roll-off dumpster ($350 to $600 per week) for disposal. Trim tree limbs and cover attic belongings before tearing off old materials.
