10 Entryway Storage Solutions for Homes Without a Mudroom

August 6, 2026 · 11 min read
A technical blueprint diagram showing a flat-lay of entryway tools including a 24-inch level, stud finder, and heavy-duty toggle bolts.
This blueprint highlights the essential tools and materials needed to build your DIY entryway storage.

Tools, Materials, and Prep Checklist

Executing an entryway organization project requires basic hand tools along with specialized fasteners tailored to your wall type. Having these materials ready ensures smooth installation and guarantees your hardware supports heavy winter loads safely.

Essential Tools: An electronic stud finder with deep scanning capability; a 24-inch spirit level; a cordless drill and driver set with masonry and wood bits; a 25-foot tape measure; a pencil for layout marking; and a non-contact voltage tester to check for hidden wiring behind drywall.

Required Materials and Hardware: Heavy-duty toggle bolts or steel wall anchors rated for at least 50 pounds per anchor; 3-inch interior wood screws; hardwood mounting boards such as 1-by-6 oak or poplar boards; heavy-duty cast metal coat hooks; an ultra-slim tilt-out shoe cabinet; rubber boot trays; and low-VOC interior paint or wood stain.

Preparation and Site Assessment: Before drilling into your walls, measure your entryway dimensions carefully; verify that your main entrance door opens fully to a 90-degree angle without hitting planned storage units. Use your electronic stud finder to locate load-bearing wall studs—typically spaced 16 inches apart on center—and mark their centerlines clearly on your wall. Test for hidden electrical conduit using your voltage sensor, especially near light switches or electrical outlets near the door jamb.
