8 Signs You Should Hire Movers Instead of Doing It Yourself

Maintenance & Long-Term Care

Once the moving crew completes delivery, taking specific proactive care steps protects both your property and your belongings long after the move is complete.

Floor and Wall Care After Placement

Heavy dressers, sectional sofas, and solid wood tables can leave deep indentations or scratches on flooring surfaces. Attach heavy-duty felt floor pads to the bottom of all furniture legs before sliding or placing them onto hardwood, tile, or luxury vinyl plank floors. Check area rugs beneath heavy items regularly to prevent permanent fiber crushing. Inspect walls along narrow staircases and hallways for accidental scuffs; touch up minor marks using matching interior latex paint and a small foam brush.

Furniture Stability and Safety Anchor Kits

For long-term household safety, anchor tall furniture—such as bookcases, dressers, chest of drawers, and entertainment centers—directly into wall studs using steel anti-tip brackets and heavy-duty drywall anchors. This step is essential for homes with children or pets, protecting against tip-over hazards caused by uneven flooring or accidental climbing.

Document and Inventory Preservation

Store your signed bill of lading, moving contract receipts, and inventory sheets in a designated home record binder. Retain these receipts for potential tax deductions (if moving for qualifying military or business relocations) or insurance claims. Keep a digital copy of your date-stamped condition photos saved in cloud storage for quick retrieval should you notice hidden damage within your mover’s reporting window.
