Style & Finishing Touches

Replacing plain white or pale green with deep, expressive tones dramatically transforms the ambiance of your home. To help you evaluate popular kitchen cabinet colors, here are nine major trends leading modern interior design, paired with current industry paint selections and styling options.

1. Medium and Light Natural Wood Stains

Leading the market at 26 percent combined market share, natural wood stains bring organic texture into modern kitchens. White oak and walnut lead this movement, showcasing clear vertical grain patterns and warm undertones. Pair light oak lower cabinets with white quartz countertops and unlacquered brass hardware to create a balanced, earthy atmosphere.

2. Dark Espresso and Chocolate Brown

Rich brown tones offer a modern, grounded alternative to traditional dark wood cabinets. Paint manufacturers like Benjamin Moore selected Silhouette—a deep espresso brown with smoky charcoal undertones—as a featured color of the year. Contrast chocolate cabinetry with warm alabaster walls, cream marble countertops, and warm copper pulls.

3. Deep Inky Navy and Midnight Blue

Navy remains a quintessential cabinet choice that bridges classic traditionalism with modern edge. Deep midnight blues work extraordinarily well on kitchen islands or lower cabinet banks. Combine dark navy cabinets with bright white subway tile backsplashes, polished nickel hardware, and butcher block accent counters.

4. Rich Plum, Aubergine, and Burgundy Red

Deep reddish-purple and wine hues infuse high-end drama into kitchen spaces. Glidden and PPG selected Warm Mahogany, a burnished red-brown shade that brings rich warmth to wood surfaces. Enhance aubergine or plum cabinets with brushed gold hardware, warm oak floor planks, and soft ambient under-cabinet LED strip lighting.

5. Warm Mushroom, Taupe, and Greige

If you prefer neutral cabinet color ideas but want more warmth than flat gray, mushroom and taupe deliver sophisticated balance. Sherwin-Williams highlighted Universal Khaki, an earthy taupe shade that grounds kitchen spaces. Pair taupe cabinets with warm off-white soapstone counters, matte black hardware, and hand-molded Zellige wall tile.

6. Terracotta, Clay, and Burnt Dusty Orange

Drawing inspiration from Mediterranean architecture and desert landscapes, terracotta and burnt clay bring joyful warmth into the home. NKBA reports that 41 percent of design professionals expect terracotta to stay prominent. Complement clay cabinets with creamy plaster range hoods, warm terracotta floor tiles, and aged bronze cabinet pulls.

7. Transformative Teal and Smoky Jade

Teal sits right between calming blue and restoring green, offering vibrant personality without overpowering small rooms. Trend forecaster WGSN chose Transformative Teal as its key color, while Behr unveiled Hidden Gem, a deep smoky jade green. Combine teal or jade cabinets with bright marble backsplashes, floating wood shelves, and satin brass fixtures.

8. Deep Olive and Forest Greens

While light sage green is tapering off, saturated jewel greens like olive, cypress, and forest green are surging forward. Dunn-Edwards highlighted Midnight Garden, a deep muted green with charcoal depth. Frame forest green cabinets with warm honed granite countertops, raw brass hardware, and warm white perimeter walls.

9. Charcoal and Soft Black

Soft black and dark charcoal cabinets anchor open-concept floor plans with striking architectural contrast. Unlike flat stark black, soft charcoal contains subtle warm undertones that soften its appearance under natural daylight. Pair charcoal cabinets with warm butcher block kitchen islands, white subway tile, and warm bronze cabinet hardware.
