Before You Throw That Away: 12 Items That Need a Different Kind of Disposal

August 18, 2026 · 12 min read

FAQ

Can I throw completely empty paint cans into my regular curbside trash?
Yes, in most municipalities, you can place completely empty, dry paint cans into standard household trash once the lid is removed. If any liquid remains, you must harden latex paint using clay kitty litter or commercial paint hardener before disposal, while oil-based paint cans must go to a hazardous waste facility regardless of remaining volume.

Why do I need to tape the terminals of standard 9-volt and lithium batteries?
Nine-volt and lithium batteries have closely spaced, exposed positive and negative terminals. When loose batteries touch other metal objects or each other inside a bin, they can easily create an electrical short circuit. This generates intense heat and can ignite surrounding cardboard, paper, or plastic packaging.

What is the proper procedure if a CFL bulb breaks on my floor?
Have all people and pets leave the room immediately, and air out the space for 10 to 15 minutes by opening an exterior window. Carefully scoop up glass fragments and phosphor powder using stiff cardboard or index cards rather than a vacuum cleaner, which spreads mercury vapor. Wipe the area with damp paper towels, seal everything inside a glass jar or plastic bag, and deliver it to your local hazardous waste depot.

How do I find out when my community hosts hazardous household waste collection days?
Visit the official website of your municipal public works department, county solid waste authority, or regional health agency. Most counties host dedicated household hazardous collection events in the spring and fall, and many maintain permanent drop-off facilities that accept items year-round at no cost to residents.
