8 Signs Your Deck Needs Repairs Before Summer

Maintenance & Long-Term Care

Consistent deck maintenance before summer protects your structural investments and extends the working life of both natural wood and synthetic building materials. Establish a bi-annual maintenance routine every spring and autumn to identify minor flaws before they expand into dangerous structural failures.

Perform the water drop test annually on natural wood decks to evaluate your protective sealant. Splash a few tablespoons of clean water onto high-traffic walking areas and stair treads. If the water beads tightly on the surface, your protective barrier remains effective. If the water absorbs into the grain within 60 seconds and darkens the wood, thoroughly clean your deck and apply an exterior penetrating oil or acrylic sealer.

Clean your deck surface using an oxygenated bleach solution rather than harsh chlorine bleach, which damages wood fibers and corrodes metal hardware. Avoid using high-pressure power washers at maximum pressure on softwoods; excessive pressure gouges pine and cedar grain and raises sharp splinters. Use a soft-bristle scrub brush and a garden hose with a spray nozzle. Clear organic debris from board gaps using a putty knife to ensure air circulation and prevent moisture accumulation.
