Never Use Your Microwave for These 6 Things

Wiping down the dirty interior with a yellow cloth is key to proper microwave maintenance.

Maintenance & Long-Term Care

Performing routine maintenance protects your investment and ensures your meals taste perfectly fresh every time. Grease splatters and baked-on food particles left lingering on the interior walls absorb ambient energy during subsequent heating cycles. This slows down your cooking times and creates localized hot spots that burn the appliance walls.

To cut through stubborn grime effortlessly, utilize the power of steam. Fill a microwave-safe bowl with one cup of water and several thick slices of fresh lemon. Heat the bowl on high for five minutes until the water boils vigorously, then leave the door closed for another five minutes. The trapped citrus steam softens hardened grease, allowing you to wipe the entire interior clean with a damp microfiber cloth.

Pay special attention to the small, cardboard-like square on the right interior wall of your unit. This piece, called the waveguide cover or mica sheet, protects the magnetron from food debris. If grease accumulates heavily on this sheet, it will eventually carbonize and cause sparking. You can purchase a replacement mica sheet for less than $10; simply unscrew the damaged one and snap the fresh cover into place. Finally, routinely wipe down the rubber gaskets around the door to ensure a tight, secure seal that prevents radiation leakage.
