Gather cheap household essentials like vinegar, wood glue, and a screwdriver to tackle common everyday annoyances.

Tools, Materials, and Prep Checklist

Preparing your workspace before starting ensures clean execution and saves unnecessary trips to the store. You can complete most easy DIY home annoyance fixes using a basic household toolkit and standard consumer supplies.

Standard Screwdriver Set: You need both #2 Phillips-head and flat-head screwdrivers to tighten hardware, adjust hinges, and remove faceplates. Average cost: $10 to $15.

Wooden Toothpicks or Wooden Matches: These serve as filler material to restore stripped screw holes in hollow-core or solid wood doors and cabinets. Average cost: $2.

Wood Glue (PVA Glue): A 4-ounce bottle of interior wood glue secures wooden shims and anchors screws firmly in enlarged pilot holes. Average cost: $4.

Distilled White Vinegar: Standard 5 percent acidity white vinegar dissolves tough calcium and lime mineral deposits on showerheads and aerators without harsh chemical fumes. Average cost: $3 per gallon.

Self-Adhesive Rubber Bumper Pads: Package of 50 to 100 clear silicone or felt bumpers prevents cabinet doors and drawers from slamming shut against frames. Average cost: $6.

Dry Silicone Spray or Paraffin Wax: Lubricates sticky window tracks, sliding door channels, and drawer glides without attracting dust or grime. Average cost: $7.

Replacement Toilet Flapper: A universal rubber flapper valve fits most standard gravity-flush toilets to stop continuous tank leaks instantly. Average cost: $8.

Self-Adhesive Foam Weatherstripping Tape: A 17-foot roll of 3/8-inch wide foam weatherstripping seals gaps around windows and exterior doors. Average cost: $6.

Small Drywall Patch Kit: Includes lightweight spackling compound, a 2-inch putty knife, and a fine-grit sanding block to fill minor wall dents and nail holes. Average cost: $9.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Always wear safety glasses to safeguard your eyes from falling debris and vinegar splatters, along with nitrile gloves to keep hands clean during glue and spackle application. Refer to standard safety guidelines outlined by OSHA when operating basic hand tools and chemicals.
