10 Seemingly Harmless Ways You May Be Ruining Your House

5. Ignoring Your Air Filter

Your HVAC system is working properly as long as your air filter is doing the same. By ignoring your air filter entirely, you risk ruining your HVAC system.

Your air filter keeps dirt and debris out of your blower motor, preventing it from becoming clogged. If you don’t clean or change it when it gets dirty, the air won’t be able to completely flow through, which means your system will have to put out extra energy to cool your house. This will first lead to a higher energy bill as usual, then the HVAC system will stop working at some point.

Replacing or repairing your system can be avoided with regular upkeep and maintenance. If you’re using a standard air filter, experts recommend changing it once a month during the winter. But, if you know you tend to forget to change the filter, consider investing in a high-end pleated one, as they can last up to six months.
