8 Summer Gardening Tasks Experts Never Skip

Essential tools like bypass pruners, drip emitters, and a hori hori knife make summer gardening prep easy.

Tools, Materials, and Prep Checklist

Equipping yourself with professional-grade tools makes summer garden maintenance safer and far more efficient. Shoddy equipment causes jagged cuts that invite plant disease and increases your physical strain. Expect to spend between $150 and $250 if you need to build this toolkit from scratch, though most homeowners already own several of these essentials.

Essential Tools and Materials:

Bypass Pruners (1 pair): Invest $30 to $50 in high-carbon steel bypass pruners. Unlike anvil pruners which crush stems, bypass blades slice cleanly like scissors, promoting rapid plant healing.

Soaker Hoses or Drip Emitters (50 to 100 feet): Budget $25 to $50. Soaker hoses deliver water directly to the soil surface, reducing evaporation and preventing waterborne leaf diseases.

Organic Hardwood Mulch (10 to 15 bags): Depending on your bed size, expect to pay $4 to $6 per two-cubic-foot bag. Avoid dyed rubber mulches; organic wood chips break down and enrich the soil profile.

Hori Hori Knife or Sturdy Trowel (1 tool): Costing around $25, a soil knife with a serrated edge easily cuts through stubborn weed roots and compacted summer soil.

Safety and Prep Gear: Heat exhaustion poses a severe threat during summer yard work. The CDC and NIOSH strongly recommend working during the early morning hours before 10:00 AM. Wear a wide-brimmed hat, apply SPF 50 sunscreen, and keep a large insulated water bottle nearby. Before stepping into the garden, sharpen your pruner blades with a diamond file and wipe them down with 70-percent isopropyl alcohol to prevent the spread of plant pathogens.
