Maintenance & Long-Term Care
Implementing targeted water heater maintenance tips significantly prolongs the operating life of your system and maintains peak energy efficiency. Consistent seasonal upkeep slows the rate of internal tank corrosion and keeps mineral buildup under control.
Annual Tank Flushing Protocol: Connect a heavy-duty garden hose to the lower drain valve at least once every 12 months, or every 6 months if you live in a region with hard water. Shut off the power or gas supply, attach the hose to a floor drain or outdoor discharge area, open the drain valve, and flush the sediment until the water runs completely clear. This routine prevents calcified minerals from baking into an insulating crust on the tank floor.
Sacrificial Anode Rod Inspection: Inspect your sacrificial anode rod every 3 to 5 years. Use a 1-1/16-inch socket wrench to unscrew the hex head on top of the tank and pull the rod upward. If the core steel wire is visible across more than 50% of the rod, replace it immediately with a new magnesium or aluminum-zinc anode rod to protect the steel tank from rust.
Thermostat Calibration: Set your water heater thermostat dial precisely to 120°F (49°C). This recommended benchmark reduces standby heat loss, lowers your annual utility bill, slows mineral scale formation, and prevents accidental household scalding injuries.
