Listen closely while the burner or electric element fires to heat incoming water. Popping, sizzling, or loud rumbling noises signal heavy sediment accumulation at the base of the tank. As dissolved calcium carbonate and magnesium settle out of municipal or well water, they bake into a dense layer of mineral scale; trapped water beneath this hardened crust boils violently, fracturing the protective glass lining and burning out heating elements.
Sign 4: Moisture Accumulation or Active Leaking Around the Base
Examine the floor, drip pan, and bottom perimeter of the tank using your LED flashlight. While loose pipe nipples or a dripping temperature and pressure relief valve can cause localized moisture, active water pooling directly from the outer metal jacket indicates an internal structural fracture. Water heater tanks expand and contract continuously; over time, microscopic stress fractures widen into permanent structural leaks that cannot be patched.
Sign 5: Inconsistent Hot Water Temperatures or Fast Depletion

If your showers turn lukewarm after just a few minutes, either your lower heating element has burned out or your internal plastic dip tube has cracked.
