Don’t Get Rid of These 10 Things If You Want to Sell Your Home Faster, Realtors Say

August 18, 2026 · 10 min read

Maintenance & Long-Term Care

Keeping your home showcase-ready while living in it requires a disciplined daily routine. Establish a 15-minute reset each morning before leaving the house: make all beds, wipe down kitchen and bathroom counters with a dry microfiber cloth, open all window blinds, and turn on secondary accent lamps.

Address pet odors aggressively by washing pet bedding weekly and vacuuming upholstered furniture with a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) vacuum. Store pet bowls, litter boxes, and scratching posts in tucked-away utility rooms or take portable carriers with you during scheduled showings.

Maintain outdoor staging and exterior assets throughout your listing period. Sweep front porches weekly, replace faded doormats, and power wash entry steps to preserve curb appeal. Change your central HVAC air filter monthly to eliminate lingering household odors and maintain pristine indoor air quality during open house walkthroughs.
