Don’t Get Rid of These 10 Things If You Want to Sell Your Home Faster, Realtors Say

August 18, 2026 · 10 min read

Tools, Materials, and Prep Checklist

Before sorting through your belongings, gather the proper packing and staging supplies to streamline the workflow. You will need six to eight heavy-duty clear storage bins ($15 each) for items you intend to tuck away, three rolls of color-coded painter’s tape ($8 each) for labeling, and a set of microfiber cleaning cloths ($12) for surface dusting. Purchase heavy-duty furniture sliders ($12 per pack of four) to move heavy seating without scratching hardwood or snagging carpets.

Lighting dramatically influences buyer perception, so pick up two multi-packs of warm-white 2700K to 3000K LED light bulbs ($15 per six-pack) certified by ENERGY STAR to establish consistent color temperature across every room fixture. To refresh existing seating without buying new pieces, invest in two or three neutral throw blankets ($20 to $40 each) and textured accent pillow covers ($15 each). Keep a cordless drill, level, and stud finder handy for securing wall decor and tall furniture anchors.

Safety remains paramount during pre-listing preparation. Always lift heavy furniture using your legs rather than your back, and recruit a partner for items weighing more than 50 pounds. Inspect all walkways to maintain a clear 36-inch path of travel throughout every room, which satisfies standard accessibility and fire egress guidelines. If you discover unstable dressers or tall bookcases, anchor them securely to wall studs following recommendations from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission to prevent tip-over accidents during showings.
