8 Signs Your Home’s Insulation Needs an Upgrade

August 14, 2026 · 12 min read

Maintenance & Long-Term Care

Preserving your updated thermal barrier requires minimal effort when paired with regular seasonal home maintenance routines. Implementing a few consistent habits protects your investment from moisture intrusion and physical disturbance.

Biannual Attic and Roof Inspections: Check your attic space twice a year—once in late autumn before the heating season and once in late spring before running the air conditioning. Verify that roof penetrations around plumbing boots, chimneys, and skylights remain watertight. Ensure that blown-in material has not shifted or blocked your soffit ventilation baffles, as unobstructed airflow prevents roof rot and shingle overheating.

Managing Indoor Relative Humidity: Maintain your indoor relative humidity between 30 and 50 percent using exhaust fans in bathrooms and kitchens. Excess indoor moisture that migrates into cold attic spaces can condense within cellulose or fiberglass, causing clumping and substantial loss of R-value. Run bath fans for at least 20 minutes following showers to exhaust humid air directly outdoors through insulated ductwork.

Pest Defense and Storage Discipline: Seal exterior foundation gaps, gable vents, and rim joist crevices using stainless steel mesh and exterior polyurethane sealant to keep mice, bats, and squirrels outside. Never stack heavy storage bins directly on top of loose-fill insulation; compressed insulation cannot trap air efficiently. If you require attic storage, construct elevated catwalk platforms supported by vertical framing posts above the insulation depth.
