Suitcase safe

Keeping some of the most important items and documents somewhere safe inside a water- and fire-resistant container is actually a wonderful idea.

However, small home safes are definitely the first target for experienced thieves. In most cases, they aren’t too heavy, which makes it easier to pick them up and carry them off.

If you want to help protect valuables from thieves without having to sacrifice the fire resistance afforded by a home safe, you could keep your things in empty luggage.

Kitchen cabinets

Some valuables, such as physical will and rainy day funds, could go untouched for weeks, months, and even years. That’s why you might try to consider an out-of-the-way place to store all your important possessions.

One great place you could use is your well-known kitchen cabinets. I don’t know if that’s the case for you, but some homes actually have a half-inch gap between the ceiling and the tops of their upper cabinets, which can be seen from a ladder.

You can fill a manila folder with your valuables and secure the envelope with a pair of broad binder clips. This way, you’ll make sure it won’t slide all the way into the gap, or even fasten a string to the envelope for easier retrieval when you might want them. Ultimately, just slide the envelope into a gap.
