9 Paint Colors Designers Say Are Replacing Stark White Walls in 2026

Gently wiping water droplets off textured terracotta walls keeps your new paint color looking pristine.

Maintenance & Long-Term Care

Protecting your investment ensures your newly painted walls remain pristine for years. Premium acrylic paint requires a significant curing period. While the paint feels dry to the touch within a few hours, it takes up to thirty days for the chemical compounds to harden entirely. During this first month, avoid leaning heavy furniture against the walls or scrubbing the surface aggressively, as the fresh paint remains highly susceptible to denting and burnishing.

Routine cleaning dictates a gentle approach. When you need to remove fingerprints or smudges, avoid harsh chemical degreasers, abrasive sponges, or magic erasers. These products easily strip the sheen from your paint, leaving permanent, dull marks on your beautiful new walls. Instead, mix a few drops of mild dish soap into a bucket of warm water. Submerge a soft microfiber cloth, wring it out until it is barely damp, and gently wipe the affected area using a circular motion. Dry the spot immediately with a separate clean cloth.

Even with careful maintenance, life happens, and walls suffer scuffs. When you need to touch up a spot, your technique determines whether the repair blends in or sticks out wildly. Never use a brush to touch up a wall that was originally rolled; the difference in texture will catch the light and highlight the patch. Instead, thin a small amount of your leftover paint with a tiny splash of water. Dip a miniature foam roller into the thinned paint, dab off the excess, and lightly feather the paint over the scuff mark. This method mimics the original stipple texture, rendering the repair virtually invisible.
