The Kitchen Countertop Materials That Hold Up Best Over Time

June 24, 2026 · 11 min read
An illustrated checklist of kitchen installation tools, including a carpenter's level, putty knife, pry bar, and safety glasses.
From levels to drills, having these essential installation tools ready ensures a flawless kitchen countertop setup.

Tools, Materials, and Prep Checklist

Preparing your kitchen for a countertop replacement requires specific demolition tools, safety gear, and leveling materials. Whether you hire professionals or plan to install a DIY wood surface, you must prepare the foundation. A successful home renovation demands a level base to prevent heavy stone from cracking.

Equip yourself with the right hand tools for a clean tear-out. You need a putty knife and a sharp utility knife to slice through old silicone caulk. A flat pry bar and a claw hammer will help you lift the old countertop away safely. Keep a cordless drill handy to back out hidden screws driven up through the base cabinets. To guarantee a flat installation surface, use a reliable 4-foot carpenter’s level.

Stock up on essential materials. Purchase several packs of tapered wood shims to micro-adjust uneven cabinets. You need heavy-duty construction adhesive to secure wood replacements and mold-resistant silicone sealant to waterproof the seams around your sink. If supporting natural stone over a wide dishwasher void, purchase 3/4-inch plywood strips and steel brackets to prevent the slab from bowing.

Never skip safety gear. Wear wrap-around safety glasses to protect your eyes from flying splinters. Heavy-duty, cut-resistant gloves are mandatory when handling raw edges or wrestling with old countertops.
