Boost Your Home Value: 10 Easy DIY Things You Can Do

June 23, 2022 · Expert Tips

Did you know that there are a few things you can do to boost your home’s value?

Every home represents a treasure for its owner and everyone wants their houses or apartments to always look good and have a high value. But sometimes life happens and the last thing you want to do is to spend a fortune on an entire house renovation.

Even though they can add value to your home, there are some other simpler ways to upgrade your home without breaking your piggy bank savings. Activities such as power washing the outside of your home, painting, and re-grouting tile won’t cost you a fortune, and these easy DIY home improvements might add a lot of value to your beloved home.

If this is something that interests you, let’s take a look at these 10 things you can do to boost your home’s value.

1. Update your fixtures

It doesn’t cost you a lot of money to switch the plates, curtain rods, doorknobs, and light fixtures, but a little goes a long way. There are some cheap but good-looking outlet covers and metal switch plates that can cost $5, but look a lot more expensive.

It’s true that decorative curtain rods and light fixtures might be a bit pricier, but if you don’t have the budget for them, you can buy more affordable products and then DIY them with a can of spray paint to give them more life.

2. Paint the walls

When the paint on your walls is dirty, too loud, or if it has scratches or a fading wallpaper, the whole interior seems messy. All you need is a few cans of paint, some physical strength, and a lot of patience to make your walls look good again.

If you want to maximize the value of your home, choose a color scheme that is more muted and goes well with your furniture and your decor items, and that makes the whole place brighter and more spacious.

3. Install ceiling fans

…Who doesn’t want to save money on their electricity bills, while also having a nice temperature inside?

Ceiling fans can bring value to everyone who wants to save some extra money. They cut down air conditioning costs and they can also reduce heating costs due to the warm air that circulates away from the ceiling.

A basic fan will cost you roughly $50, but if you want something more advanced, you can purchase one for a few hundred dollars. However, if you don’t already have wiring from overhead lighting, you might need to ask a professional for services, which will drive up the price of this project dramatically.

4. Add crown molding

It’s not hard to add crown molding to your walls and make them look a lot fancier and stylish. You can buy it from a local home improvement store and then cut it so that it fits your rooms, or you can ask the store’s employees to do it for you. Furthermore, you can attach it to the walls with the help of a nail gun.

…They will completely transform your home and boost its value!

5. Upgrade your window treatments

Those cheap and vertical plastic blinds or those horizontal aluminum blinds that might come with your house won’t make it look very stylish or bring it value.

You might consider replacing them with some nice colored shutters, drapes, or wooden blinds. There are plenty of possibilities you can paint your shutters, depending on the look you’re going for and the color of your house’s exterior. 6. Clean the brick on your fireplace

If your home has a brick fireplace and you use it and burn wood in it, there might be a chance that your brick is stained with creosote and soot. A beautiful fireplace can boost the value of your home and also the way your overall interior look, so don’t neglect it.

Wipe away some of the soot that has built up there with a damp rag, then move on to the next step by using a special fireplace cleaning product to get rid of the creosote.

We want to be honest with you and this is why we tell you that it might take a little while to wipe away all the dirt and bacteria. You might need to scrub everything with a stiff brush and maybe keep applying the cleaning products until you’re done, but the brick will look so good, that all the effort will be worth it! So be patient!

7. Redo the bathroom floor

There are plenty of installations you can DIY and save a lot of money. If you know how to install flooring, you’re great, because you’ll save some extra money on labor and this will give you the possibility to choose something prettier that you couldn’t have afforded otherwise.

Choose something more neutral and muted and avoid prints and complicated designs, if you know that you’ll soon get bored of it. And if you ever think about selling or renting your house, that neutral-colored tile might add some value to it!

8. Paint your kitchen cabinets

A cheaper but still money-draining thing you can do to boost your home’s value is to buy prefabricated cabinets and install them yourself, instead of buying custom. However, it’s time-consuming and it requires more money than staining or painting the cabinets you already have.

A color that will never go out of style and that will also make your kitchen appear bigger and brighter is white. And if in the future you grow out of it and you want to change it for something that is more fresh and colorful, you can easily repaint them.

Before you start the painting project, you’ll have to remove the hardware from each cabinet, including the doors. Don’t forget to clean the cabinets beforehand, so that dirt, bacteria, and greasy residues won’t mess with your hard work.

…And if you have enough paint, what about giving your bathroom cabinets a spruce up as well?

9. Reveal the hardwood floors

If you have an older house, they usually have hardwood floors hidden underneath the carpets. So if you hear creeking noises when you walk, this might be the reason why.

However, if you have no idea about this, you can pull up your carpet somewhere in an insignificant corner and check. If your home actually has wood floors, you are more likely to have to refinish them so that you can bring back their former beauty.

And before you ask, they will cost some money, but the whole thing will be way cheaper compared to installing new flooring from scratch.

10. Update your bathroom’s fixtures

If you have plain, boring, or cheap fixtures in your bathroom, it might be time to replace them with something new and more good-looking to make your bathroom sparkle again. You can replace your old bathroom vanity with something more elegant and stylish that is also affordable, $40 to $100, to be more exact.

For a new sink faucet, you’ll have to pay a similar sum in the range previously mentioned, while for a shining and chrome shower case you’ll have to pay $80 out of your pocket.

…But at the end of all these fix-ups, your bathroom will look amazing!
