Your statement stone wall requires specific, simple maintenance to retain its dramatic impact. Natural stone is inherently porous; without protection, it absorbs airborne cooking oils, smoke, and moisture.

You must apply a high-quality, impregnating stone sealer every one to two years. Test your seal by splashing a few drops of water onto the stone; if the water beads up immediately, your seal remains strong. If the stone darkens and absorbs the water, you need to reapply the sealer immediately.

For weekly cleaning, use only pH-neutral stone cleaners. You must strictly avoid acidic cleaners containing vinegar, lemon juice, or bleach. Acid causes a chemical reaction called “etching” on calcium-based stones like marble and travertine, which permanently dulls the finish and eats away at the dramatic veining you worked so hard to showcase.

If your feature wall surrounds a fireplace, perform an annual inspection of the grout lines and stone faces. The extreme thermal expansion and contraction caused by the heat can occasionally cause micro-cracks in rigid grout. Catching these early allows you to touch up the joints before any tiles loosen.
