6. Wrong size rug

Rugs are an important part of your decor, so it is essential you get the right one. A good rug will add texture, ground the furniture, and create zones in a bigger space.

When choosing a rug for a specific room, size is the first criterion you should consider. A rug too big will make your furniture look like it is lost at sea, while a rug too small will make your room small and crowded. As a general rule, find a rug that fits under the major elements of a room or serves as a buffer between zones.

If you are on a budget, you can buy a smaller rug and place it under the room’s centerpiece. Layering can also be an option. Put a smaller rug with a distinct pattern and texture over a larger, more neutral rug.
