13 Genius Ways to Use Wax Paper Beyond the Kitchen

Gather wax paper, vinegar, and tools alongside your checklist to tackle these genius household DIY projects.

Tools, Materials, and Prep Checklist

Executing these DIY home tricks requires very little upfront investment. You likely own most of the necessary supplies already. Gather these items before tackling the household hacks listed below to ensure you achieve the best possible results.

Primary Materials:

You need one standard roll of wax paper. Avoid substituting parchment paper; parchment relies on a silicone coating intended for high-heat baking and lacks the soft, transferable wax required to lubricate surfaces or repel water effectively.

Cleaning and Prep Supplies:

Applying wax over dirt merely traps the grime and prevents the paraffin from adhering to the surface. Clean your target areas thoroughly using a mild degreaser. Mix warm water with a few drops of standard dish soap, and wipe the surfaces down using lint-free microfiber cloths. Keep a bottle of standard white vinegar on hand to dissolve any existing hard water scale on plumbing fixtures before you apply your protective wax layer.

Basic Hand Tools:

Keep a flathead screwdriver, a Phillips-head screwdriver, and a lightweight rubber mallet nearby. You need these tools to remove door hinge pins, adjust cabinet tracks, and disassemble minor hardware components safely. If you plan to line high surfaces, grab a reliable step stool and a roll of low-tack painter’s tape to secure the paper edges firmly in place.
