Tools, Materials, and Prep Checklist
Proper preparation separates a durable, professional-looking paint job from a messy, peeling disaster. Before opening a single can of paint, you need to gather the right supplies. Investing in high-quality applicators and premium paint saves you time and frustration during the application process.
Material List and Approximate Costs
Interior Paint: Plan for two gallons of your primary color and one gallon of your secondary color. Premium latex paint costs around $45 to $80 per gallon. Opt for an eggshell or satin finish for the best balance of washability and glare reduction.
Primer: Buy one to two gallons, estimating $20 to $30 per gallon. Primer ensures true color rendering, especially if you are painting a light color over a dark existing wall.
Painter’s Tape: Purchase three rolls of multi-surface edge tape at approximately $8 per roll. This creates the razor-sharp lines necessary for dual-tone designs.
Drop Cloths: Heavy-weight canvas drop cloths cost about $20 each. Avoid thin plastic sheeting, which poses a severe slipping hazard and rarely stays in place under heavy foot traffic.
Essential Tools
You will need a sturdy paint tray with disposable liners, two 2.5-inch angled synthetic bristle brushes for cutting in, and a high-quality roller frame equipped with 3/8-inch nap roller covers. An extension pole is mandatory for reaching high sections without straining your back. Have a putty knife, fine-grit sandpaper, and a tub of lightweight spackle on hand to patch nail holes and dents.
Safety and Preparation Callouts
Always verify the age of your property. If your home was built before 1978, the existing layers might contain lead. The Environmental Protection Agency mandates specific testing and containment protocols before you sand or scrape older walls. Ensure adequate ventilation by opening windows and running box fans to exhaust chemical fumes. When using a step ladder to tape ceiling edges, abide by standard safety guidelines—keep three points of contact and never stand on the top rung.
