10 Accent Colors That Will Still Look Right in a Decade

A labeled jar of green paint and a brush make maintaining your accent walls easy.

Maintenance & Long-Term Care

Protecting your newly painted surfaces ensures the accent colors remain vibrant and scuff-free for years. Wait at least thirty days before washing your accent wall. Acrylic latex paint requires a full month to cure completely and harden, even if it feels dry to the touch within hours. Once cured, dust your walls quarterly using a clean microfiber cloth attached to a sweeper pole; this prevents everyday dust accumulation from dulling the finish over time.

For routine cleaning, completely avoid harsh chemical degreasers or abrasive scrubbing pads, which strip the paint and leave permanent shiny spots. Mix a few drops of mild dish soap into a bucket of warm water, wring out a soft sponge until it is barely damp, and gently wipe away fingerprints or smudges.

Keep a small, airtight mason jar of leftover paint stored in a climate-controlled area—never an unheated garage or freezing shed—for inevitable touch-ups. When fixing a scratch, use a small artist’s brush to dab the paint precisely onto the damage rather than brushing it out. Dabbing helps the fresh paint blend seamlessly into the existing roller texture on the wall.
