You don’t need to overlook plumbing, for example, or heating, or even air conditioning, because you can repair them by yourself.

We will tell you some DIY hacks that will be more than helpful in case you need them.

If your first instinct is to call a plumber whenever something goes wrong, then you should carefully read our article because some tricks are worth learning if you don’t know them already!

1. Garbage disposal repair

One of the most annoying things is having to fix a broken garbage disposal. But at the same time, it’s pretty easy to DIY.

It’s easy to fix because, first of all, you need to clean it and then get rid of the smell.

And if the splash guard needs a replacement, you can do that by yourself in less than 30 minutes.

Also, if you need to replace the entire disposal, you can replace it yourself too.

It doesn’t require professional help.

2.Don’t use your toilet as a garbage can

This is an important matter, even if you think it’s just common sense.

A lot of plumbers are called to unclog toilets on a daily basis.

You would be surprised, but a lot of people use their toilets as garbage cans. They are throwing a lot in there of stuff that shouldn’t be in a toilet because it can simply break.

One thing that you shouldn’t throw in the toilet is dental floss. It will tangle and when you try to flush it, the water will be stuck.

This doesn’t need DIY skills, only some attention and proper use of the toilet in order to have it clean and usable.

3. Fix a smelly dishwasher

This is definitely a DIY project that you can easily do without any professional help.

You can stop the dishwasher from smelling bad by simply cleaning food scraps from the tub and running the dishwasher cleaner through one cycle.

Don’t forget to use only specific cleaning products (not vinegar or something household related) because you don’t need to damage the dishwasher.

It’s easy to do! Keep this in mind the next time you are planning a deep cleanse.

4. Fix loud cabinet doors

Tired of the slamming door sound? Then it’s time to fix this. How? Of course, this is another DIY project you can do on your own because it doesn’t require much skill.

The only thing you need to do is to buy drawer bumpers.

They can stick very easily to the door, and a pack of 20 pieces is easily found on Amazon.

Please make sure that you dust the door completely in order to stick the bumpers easily. One sticker on the bottom of the door and another at the top. Easy-peasy, right?

Why spend tons of money on a professional when you can DIY?

5. How to fix roof vents

Of course, in this case, you’d want to throw caulk at the problem, but this quick fix won’t last that long. And there is no way to fix this problem by just replacing the damaged vents. You will also have to look for the missing nails at the base’s bottom edge.

They need to be replaced with rubber washer screws, and in many cases, you will need to remove the nails under the shingles on both sides of the vent to pull it free.

In some cases, you can work with what you have without removing the shingles.

Just squeeze out a bead of caulk beneath the shingles on both sides of the vent to hold the shingles down and to add a water barrier.

This DIY job is much easier than re-nailing the shingles. Plus, it’s going to be less expensive than calling a professional. You can always ask your children for help.

6. Unclog clogged drains

This might be a dirty job, but you have to do it yourself at least once a month. Usually, the clogged drains are caused by hair or grease from the dishes.

That’s why it is recommended to drain the grease from the pan in another place, not in the sink or the toilet. Especially if the oil is hot.

You can skip cleaning the drain with chemicals and just grab a plunger.

This is an easy task and will help you keep your money in your pocket instead of asking for a plumber’s help.

This can happen to your bathtub as well. That’s why you should catch the hair before it reaches the drain.

Plenty of times, it is better to have a drain snake in the house, you know, to make sure you have something that can help you. It may not be necessary, but it is good to have one around.

7. Fix your refrigerator

This can happen because the refrigerator is set wrong and it may not have the right temperature. This is definitely a DIY job and you don’t need an expert to fix it.

It may be as simple as turning the dial to a lower temperature.

It depends on the fridge because, by mistake, someone could bump the dial while putting away the jelly jar.

But they might also be tangled with pet hair or dust, so remove the front grille and vacuum a little.

8. Pop-up stopper

This pop-up stopper is pretty useful for the sink because it prevents it from clogging.

But if you don’t clean it for a long period of time, you might start to notice a lot of yucky stuff.

It may start to smell, and if you notice that your sink is draining a bit slowly, remove it and clean it.

The best way to clean it is with baking soda powder and let it sink for about 10 minutes. And most of the pop-up stoppers are easy to remove from the sink.

Just be careful of the way it’s hooked in.

9. Don’t forget to collect your food waste

It might be easier to just throw everything down the drain, but it may become messy because it can clog.

A good idea is to collect all the organic waste in a container and add it to a compost pile. Or if you have a garden, you can use it as natural plant fertilizer.

A lot of cities collect the waste for composting, but in case your city doesn’t, DIY.

Kind reminder: Don’t put meat or greasy stuff in the bin because it will take forever to break down. Plus, it will smell nasty.

10. You’re not getting enough heat?

This can happen because of the woven fiberglass filters, but they are easy to change, and actually you should change them at least once a month and buy some high quality ones.

You know, they will last a bit longer than the cheap variant.

If this problem persists, then you should check the furnace filter and the air vents.

Another common issue with cold rooms during the winter season is a blocked cold air return.

That’s why you should make sure your couch, or rug don’t cover the cold air return vent because this can actually slow the entry of heated air into your room.
