5. Bad lighting
Lighting is often overlooked in home design. The main problem is that people rely only on overhead lights. Experts recommend layering lighting to get the most out of our design.
When you start a lighting project in a room, the first question you should ask yourself is: How is the natural light in this room, and how can I make it better? Be smart and take advantage of natural light. If the room is dark, you can use materials and mirrors to reflect the light around it.
Now, let’s talk about layering when it comes to light. Always start with the overhead light. Don’t just place it in the middle of the room. Ask yourself if there are areas that need more lighting than others. Then, consider where different tasks occur and how to improve the lighting. It can be a lamp on a working desk or a pendant fixture above a kitchen island.
You’ve got the main lighting. Now, you should add some ambient lights to make everything seem more romantic. An example can be floor lighting, highlighting shelves, or a spot over a piece of art. Decor lighting will also add character and warmth, ensuring a cosy finish. This may look like candles on the dinner table or star lights in children’s rooms.
Did you know that the temperature of the light is also an essential factor that can determine the coziness of your home? Cold light should be used in working spaces, as this light makes us more alert and shows the true color of the objects. Worm light is suitable for relaxing spaces and is usually recommended for homes.
