Crab Apple

With an abundance of the prettiest blossom in spring, these low-maintenance landscaping trees are an amazing source of pollen and nectar for insects, and they add a fantastic appeal to any backyard.

There are many different varieties you can choose from, and the heights vary. So be sure to check the labels carefully before purchasing. The smaller ones include malus “Butterball” and malus “Wisley” Crab, which can reach to be about 13 feet high.

But if you’d like a larger variety, growing up to 26 feet high is the malus “Royalty,” or you can get the malus x Zumi “Golden Hornet,” which grows throngs of tiny yellow fruits.

No matter which you choose to buy, though, be sure to plant them in the full sun, in moist but not soggy soil. After which, there’s very little maintenance required. In the wintertime, simply cut off any damaged branches or ones that you see crossing over each other.

So now that we’ve given you some of our favorite low-maintenance landscaping options, which tree will YOU choose to plant in your yard? Be sure to write to us in the comments section below.
