Never Use Your Microwave for These 6 Things

Tools, Materials, and Prep Checklist

Upgrading your kitchen for optimal food safety and appliance longevity requires a modest investment in the right supplies. You should audit your current food storage collection today and replace dangerous items with reliable, microwave-safe alternatives. Having the proper gear on hand eliminates the temptation to heat food in inappropriate containers.

Borosilicate Glass Containers: Invest in a comprehensive set of heavy-duty glass containers for reheating leftovers. Expect to spend approximately $30 to $50 for a quality set. Borosilicate glass withstands rapid temperature changes without shattering and prevents chemical transfer entirely.

Microwave-Safe Ceramic Bowls: Keep a stack of unglazed, unpainted ceramic bowls ready for daily use. Ensure they feature a designated safety stamp on the bottom. Avoid any ceramics with metallic rims or delicate decorative glazes, as these often contain hidden metals that will spark. A dependable set typically costs around $25.

Silicone Splatter Guards: Purchase reusable, BPA-free silicone lids or splatter covers to replace single-use plastics and paper towels. These guards trap steam to heat food evenly while keeping the interior walls of your appliance perfectly clean. These run about $15 and will last for years.

Class K Fire Extinguisher: Every kitchen must feature an accessible fire extinguisher rated for grease and electrical fires. Keep it mounted near an exit, away from the immediate cooking zone, so you can reach it safely if an appliance catches fire. A standard residential model costs roughly $40.

Heavy-Duty Oven Mitts: Even microwave-safe containers absorb ambient heat from the boiling food inside them. Keep thick silicone or quilted cotton mitts nearby to prevent severe burns when extracting hot liquids. A durable pair will cost you $15.
