10 Towns Where Housing Costs Stay Low

Style & Finishing Touches

With the structure secured and the climate controlled, you can direct your remaining budget toward high-impact aesthetic upgrades. Because you chose a location where housing costs stay low, you likely have the financial bandwidth to elevate the home beyond standard builder-grade finishes.

Flooring sets the entire tone for your interior layout. Rather than investing heavily in traditional site-finished hardwood, consider installing luxury vinyl plank (LVP). LVP costs a fraction of the price of real wood, installs quickly as a floating floor, and offers total waterproof protection; this makes it ideal for homes in humid southern markets like Winston-Salem or regions prone to heavy snow tracking. Select wide-plank styles in warm oak or light hickory tones to make small rooms feel expansive and modern.

Next, tackle the kitchen cabinets. If the existing cabinet boxes are structurally sound, do not rip them out. Clean them thoroughly with a degreaser, sand the surfaces, and apply a high-quality bonding primer. Finish them with a durable urethane alkyd enamel paint. Deep navy blues, sage greens, and classic warm whites currently dominate kitchen design and breathe instant life into dated woodwork. Pair your freshly painted cabinets with brushed brass or matte black hardware for a sophisticated, custom look.

Finally, update your lighting fixtures. Remove any flush-mount “boob lights” and install sleek, semi-flush LED fixtures or recessed lighting. Hang a bold, industrial-style chandelier in the dining room or place modern pendant lights over the kitchen island. Layering your lighting completely transforms the ambiance of your home, making affordable properties look like premium custom builds.
