The Party is Over! 10 Hilarious Ways to Get Your Guests to Leave (Without Being Rude)

As someone who has hosted a lot of family gatherings, I’ve found myself a lot of time in weird situations because my guests didn’t want to leave my house. I am sure that you know what I am talking about. Let’s face it! It’s there’s an art to being a good host, and an even finer art to being a good host who knows how to gently but effectively wind down a party. Do you agree?

In the end, it’s all about finding the balance between being sweet and hospitable, yet assertive enough to enough to reclaim your space and time when the evening has run its course.

I don’t remember when was the last time threw a party or hosted a dinner that stretched into the planned hours. I used to be too polite to say anything, so I found myself a lot of times, just sitting there and yawning, while my guests chatted away, blissfully unaware of the time. After a party that mixed up all my programs for the next day, I decided that it was the perfect time for a change. Since then, I started to test some methods and encourage my guests to leave sooner, without being disrespectful or making them feel bad.

The art of ending a party gracefully

Over time, I’ve turned these methods to the point where I can now wrap up a gathering in just a few minutes, without anyone feeling rushed or unwelcomed. Do you want to find out my secrets? I am ready to share everything with you. Just promise me that you’ll come back in the comment section found below and tell me how it went and if the method you tried was effective. Ha, ha! I can’t wait to read about your experiences, since I am openly communicating and sharing mine.

Hosting can be exhausting, which is why sometimes I prefer to go out or simply remain home and watch some TV. On the other hand, I hate eating food outside, it’s incredibly unhealthy and since cooking is one of my passions, I feel really great each time I am preparing to welcome guests at my house. So, I think you can understand my struggle now. I enjoy having guests, I just want to make sure they leave when I want. Am I crazy? Maybe…

One of my favorite methods is to start tidying up around the edges and collecting empty glasses. This is a simple act, but trust me, it saved me a lot of time! Oh, don’t get me wrong! This tactic is not always working, because we all know how stubborn our guests can sometimes be. But don’t worry! I have an entire list of methods I tried and I can guarantee that you’ll find the one that works best for yourself. Continue reading to find out more!

Strategies to wrap up the party

1. Change the music

In my house, music usually sets the mood, especially for the family and friends gatherings. During dinner or the party, the beats are usually high and we all sing and enjoy the lyrics while eating or drinking. I understood that if I switched to slower and more mellow tracks it could subtly encourage the guests to take leaving into consideration.

Try this trick and see how music has the power to change the entire atmosphere. You can shift the mood instantly and make your guests think about leaving because it’s getting late.

2. Offer a final round

You can use the words “last call” for a last round of drinks and subtly let your guests know that is getting late and ‘the bar’ is about to close. This trick offers the guests the chance to finish their drinks and start thinking about their departure. It’s a friendly way to end a party or a gathering without being rude.

3. Bring up early morning plans

If you need to wake up early in the morning. Talk about your plans and program, and this way, you’ll let your guests know that you are busy the next day and that having some time to rest is essential. You can casually mention your plans and it will be a polite way to signal that the party is wrapping up. A simple “I have an appointment early in the morning” can instantly make your guests think about leaving.

4. Start yawning

It’s not respectful… but yawning is contagious! It can be a great non-verbal cue that it’s time to wind down. I usually use this technique when the other methods I tried didn’t work. If you yawn, you’ll often find your guests do the same, and this way, you will make them realize that is getting late.

5. Mention the time

Just mention the time, because sometimes guests can simply lose track of time, especially when they are having a lot of fun at your home. A casual mention of the hour can be all it takes to make them leave sooner. “Wow, look at the time! It’s already past midnight!” and you’ll immediately notice how they will consider leaving.

6. Offer take-home containers

Another practical and thoughtful way to end a long evening is by offering guests take-home containers for any remaining food. This is a great technique because you will also clear out the leftovers, while subtly announcing to them that the party is over.

On Amazon, you can find very good containers. They are leakproof and reusable.

7. Serve coffee

Offering coffee or tea can be another great signal that the party is ending. It’s a common after-dinner tradition that signals the end of the visit. You can ask them who wants a cup of coffee before going home and it would be a very friendly and polite style to wrap up the night.

8. Close the bar

This is the perfect technique if you’ve set up a home bar because closing it down is a clear sign that it’s time to go home. You can also make them understand the party is over by starting to wash the dishes and by putting away bottles. This is effective at the kind of gathering where drinks are a central feature.

9. Mention travel safety

You can start talking about travel safety, especially if it’s quite late because it can be considered a polite way to announce to our guests that it’s time to head home.

10. Thank them for coming

Last but not least, you can thank them for coming. It’s a very polite way to end the evening. Tell them about how great you felt to have them by your side. This way, you will express your gratitude for their presence, while also letting them know that the party is over.

Now, let me know about your experience. Have you ever experienced this kind of situation, when your guests simply didn’t want to leave? What did you do? Let us know in the comment section found below. However, keep in mind that sacrificing your sleeping hours is not a great solution at all, especially if you have important plans the next day. So, being honest and polite should work perfectly!
