Maintenance & Long-Term Care

Protecting your designer furniture ideas requires consistent, preventative maintenance. Sun damage acts as the silent killer of antique and custom furniture. Ultraviolet rays bleach rich wood tones and dry out natural leather fibers. Install UV-blocking window film on your south-facing windows to protect your curated pieces from harsh afternoon sunlight. This upgrade costs less than $30 per window and applies easily with a squeegee and soapy water.

Keep your home humidity levels balanced between 40% and 50%. Massive fluctuations in indoor humidity cause solid wood to swell in the summer and shrink in the winter. This movement blows out joints and splits tabletops. Run a humidifier during dry winter months to protect the cellular structure of your wooden antiques.

Avoid commercial dusting sprays that contain silicone. Over time, silicone creates a cloudy barrier on the surface of your furniture that attracts dust and makes future refinishing nearly impossible. Clean your wood pieces using a slightly damp microfiber cloth, followed immediately by a dry cloth. Once a year, buff your wooden surfaces with a high-quality carnauba paste wax to restore their protective barrier and natural sheen. For upholstered pieces, vacuum velvet and linen fabrics weekly using an upholstery attachment to extract sharp dust particles that slowly cut and fray the textile fibers.
