Tools, Materials, and Prep Checklist

Tackling a furniture restoration or integration project requires the right arsenal. Skimping on prep materials guarantees a sloppy finish. Gather these supplies before you move a single piece of heavy furniture into your workspace.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Protect your lungs and eyes. Purchase an N95 or P100 half-face respirator mask ($35) to block fine wood dust and chemical fumes. You also need heavy-duty nitrile gloves ($15) and wrap-around safety goggles ($10).

Lead Paint Testing Kit: Never sand vintage painted furniture without testing it first. Pick up an EPA-recognized swab kit ($15) to ensure the surface is safe to manipulate.

Abrasives and Power Tools: Buy a random orbital sander ($50-$80) to speed up flat-surface prep. Stock up on a multi-pack of hook-and-loop sanding discs ($20) in 80, 120, and 220 grits. For curved legs and intricate carvings, purchase flexible sanding sponges ($10).

Chemical Strippers and Solvents: Choose a citrus-based gel stripper ($20 per quart) for safe, indoor-friendly finish removal. You will also need mineral spirits ($12) to clean the wood grain after stripping.

Structural Adhesives and Hardware: Secure loose joints with high-quality interior wood glue ($8). Keep a set of trigger clamps ($30) on hand to hold pieces together while the adhesive cures. Buy replacement dowels and corner braces ($15) to reinforce wobbly chair legs.

Finishing Supplies: Depending on your chosen style, secure water-based polyurethane ($25 per quart) for a durable clear coat, or natural tung oil ($20) for a matte, organic finish. Use high-density foam brushes ($5) to prevent bristle marks.
