8. African Violets

These lovely flowering plants are easy to propagate, but I should mention that it does take some time. However, the results are well worth the wait.

You can propagate your African violet by using its leaf cuttings. In fact, you’ll only need a single leaf cutting to grow an entire new plant. It’s pretty satisfying to do that, so if you have an African violet plant, I highly recommend you try it at least once.

Take a healthy leaf cutting, ensuring you cut the leaf at a 45-degree angle. Place it in moist potting soil, and make sure you keep it humid. Here’s what I do: I use a plastic clamshell container to make my own mini hothouse, and that’s where I propagate my African violets.

After several weeks, new, tiny leaves will grow out of the soil. Once you’ve got 4-6 new leaves, you can gently pull the new plant from the soil and repot it in a more permanent container.
