2. Getting the scale wrong
I hate to break it to you, but size matters.
Scale can be a complex concept for many of us to understand. It’s hard to imagine how the items you see online, in some perfect settings, will fit the rooms in your house.
The first step in determining what goes into your living room is having a ruler and measuring everything. Unfortunately, making sure everything fits is not enough. You also need to understand how all the furniture and accessories look together. If you are not careful, you can end up with a massive desk next to a tiny chair or a small painting on a big blank wall.
Taking a look at good old Neufert, it’s also a good idea. This guide will give you an example of the correct way to place furniture in spaces that are also functionally correct.
Experts also recommend applying the ‘two-thirds’ rule if you are unsure about the proportions to consider. For instance, your sofa should take up about two-thirds of the wall’s width, while a coffee table should be around two-thirds the length of the couch.
