#2 Specific Trees and Shrubs
As you may know, if you are a fan of the cardinals already, they are absolutely in love with seeds, and it is their favorite meal. So while they do visit people’s yards to have a taste from their feeders, they do end up getting the majority of their food from nature. Making sure they can find their favorite type of seed in your yard and that it becomes a good source of foraging land all year round is a good way to ensure your garden is appealing to them.
You can go the easy route of making sure the native shrubs and trees of the state are in your yard, or you can make sure you end up planting the trees and shrubs that attract these songbirds when you are doing landscaping for your yard.
If we are speaking shrubs, gray dogwood, staghorn sumac, viburnum species, and red osier dogwood are some of the best choices you can make. But when it comes to trees, you have a bit more variety to choose from. Serviceberry, crabapple, spruce, mulberry, and flowering dogwood are some of the trees that are known to be good ways to attract cardinals to your yard.
