Tools, Materials, and Prep Checklist

Treat this operation like a professional demolition job; proper gear and staging ensure a seamless process. You need reliable supplies to sort, transport, and dispose of the materials you extract from your living spaces. Avoid using flimsy grocery bags, as they will rupture and double your workload. Invest in high-quality materials to keep the project moving forward without frustrating interruptions.

Heavy-Duty Contractor Trash Bags: Purchase two boxes of 3-mil contractor bags; expect to spend around $25 to $35. Standard kitchen bags tear instantly when loaded with heavy magazines or broken plastics, creating massive messes. Contractor bags resist punctures from jagged metals and easily bear the weight of heavy discards.

Sorting Bins: Gather four large plastic heavy-duty totes or sturdy reinforced cardboard boxes. Label them clearly with a thick marker: Keep, Donate, Recycle, and Trash. Using dedicated, distinctly marked bins prevents sorted items from mixing back together during the chaos of the cleanout phase.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Wear thick leather work gloves—costing roughly $15—to protect your hands from sharp edges, hidden staples, and splintered wood. Use a high-quality N95 respirator mask when pulling forgotten items from dusty attics, damp basements, or neglected crawlspaces to protect your lungs from airborne particulates.

Cleaning Supplies: Keep a HEPA-filter shop vacuum, a stack of microfiber cloths, and a heavy-duty all-purpose cleaner nearby. You must thoroughly sanitize the newly emptied shelves and flooring before reintroducing the curated items you choose to keep.

Before you begin, establish a staging area in your driveway or a cleared room. Check local regulations regarding bulk trash pickup or hazardous waste disposal. Contacting your municipal waste management office beforehand prevents you from hauling toxic materials to your curb illegally and risking hefty fines.
