12 Designer Secrets for a More Expensive-Looking Home

Gently cleaning ornate crown molding with a soft cloth keeps your home looking pristine and sophisticated.

Maintenance & Long-Term Care

Keeping your home looking expensive requires consistent, targeted maintenance. High-end finishes show dirt and wear differently than standard builder grades, so adjust your cleaning routines accordingly.

Dark painted interior doors show dust more readily than white doors. Wipe them down bi-weekly using a damp microfiber cloth and a mild soap solution. Avoid abrasive sponges, as they will dull the semi-gloss enamel finish and leave visible scratch marks. For your newly installed crown molding and ceiling medallions, use a long-handled feather duster or a vacuum attachment with a soft brush every month to prevent cobwebs and gray dust buildup in the crevices.

Take special care of your solid brass or polished nickel hardware. Oils from your hands tarnish unlacquered brass over time, which provides a beautiful living patina. If you prefer a shiny finish, polish the hardware twice a year using a specialized brass cleaner and a soft rag. Never use harsh chemical sprays on your metal hardware, as it can strip the protective coatings.

Remove your long, heavy drapes once a year for cleaning. Check the fabric care tags carefully; while you can wash some cotton and linen blends on a cold, delicate cycle, velvet and heavy lined drapes usually require professional dry cleaning. Vacuum your layered rugs weekly using the suction-only setting, as harsh beater bars can pull and fray the fibers of natural jute and vintage textiles.
