Before you pull out the pry bar to remove your existing frame, you must gather the correct supplies to ensure a smooth, secure installation. Hanging a pre-hung unit requires precision; an out-of-plumb frame leads to dragging bottoms, broken weather seals, and compromised security.

Tools required for the job:

A reliable four-foot bubble level to ensure plumb and square framing.

A heavy-duty pry bar and hammer for carefully removing old trim and casing.

A cordless drill with a mix of drill bits and driver heads for securing hinges and locks.

A caulking gun loaded with exterior-grade silicone sealant.

Safety glasses and heavy leather work gloves to protect against splinters and sharp metal edges.

A standard twenty-five-foot tape measure for verifying rough opening dimensions; always measure diagonally to check for squareness.

A reciprocating saw equipped with a bi-metal blade to cut through stubborn nails or shims.

Materials needed:

Your chosen pre-hung exterior door unit.

One pack of wooden cedar shims for leveling the jambs against the rough opening.

Three-inch exterior wood screws to replace the short factory hinge screws, anchoring the unit directly into the wall framing.

A roll of self-adhesive flashing tape to waterproof the sill pan.

One can of minimal expanding polyurethane window and door foam insulation.

Exterior grade PVC trim to re-case the outside once the installation is complete.

Prep Guidance:

Start by measuring your existing rough opening precisely. Pry off the interior casing to expose the framing studs. Measure the width from the inside of one stud to the inside of the opposite stud. Measure the height from the subfloor to the bottom of the top header. Confirm your new pre-hung unit aligns with these exact dimensions before removing the old door. Always check your local building codes; if you live in a coastal area, you likely need a unit with a specific High-Velocity Hurricane Zone impact-resistance rating to pass inspection.
