8 Beginner Woodworking Projects Seniors Can Build Over a Weekend

Style & Finishing Touches

Applying the right finish transforms raw craft woodwork seniors build into heirloom-quality pieces. Your finishing choices dictate how the wood ages and reacts to its environment. Always start with thorough, methodical sanding. Work your way sequentially through 120-grit, 150-grit, and finally 220-grit sandpaper. Skipping grits leaves visible scratches that liquid stain will only magnify.

For indoor pieces like the sofa tray, book stand, or picture frames, oil-based polyurethane offers exceptional durability against spills and scratches. Apply three thin coats using a natural bristle brush, sanding lightly with 320-grit paper between applications to achieve a glass-smooth surface. If you prefer an easier, wipe-on application, Danish oil penetrates deep into the wood grain. This oil provides a rich, matte glow that highlights the wood’s natural character without the frustrating risk of visible brush marks.

Outdoor builds, such as the planter box and cedar birdhouse, require specific weatherproofing strategies. Never paint or stain the inside of a birdhouse, as the toxic chemicals can severely harm nesting birds; leave the interior raw and coat the exterior with an exterior-grade spar urethane. Spar urethane contains specific UV blockers that prevent harsh sunlight from turning the wood grey. For those seeking a vibrant pop of color, high-quality milk paint provides a charming, rustic aesthetic and dries completely non-toxic, making it remarkably safe for food-adjacent items like your decorative serving tray.
