Maintenance & Long-Term Care

Even the most rugged kitchen countertops require consistent maintenance to reach their maximum potential lifespan. Adopting correct daily cleaning habits and enforcing strict seasonal upkeep routines will preserve your expensive investment and keep surfaces looking showroom-ready.

Daily cleaning should involve gentle solutions. Engineered quartz, solid surface acrylic, and properly sealed granite respond beautifully to a simple mixture of warm water and mild dish soap. Wipe up accidental spills immediately. Acidic liquids like tomato juice, red wine, and lemon juice can rapidly etch natural stone or leave permanent shadows on lighter synthetic materials. Never use abrasive metal scrubbing pads or harsh chemical cleaners containing bleach or ammonia. These aggressive products will quickly dull the factory polish on natural stone and strip protective oils from wood surfaces.

Natural stone and wood demand specific seasonal upkeep. Granite and quartzite are naturally porous materials that readily absorb liquids if left unprotected. The Natural Stone Institute recommends applying a high-quality, penetrating sealer at least once a year. To test if your stone requires immediate sealing, flick a few drops of tap water onto the surface. If the water beads up into tight spheres, your protective seal remains strong. If the stone absorbs the water and turns dark, you must reapply the sealer right away. Wood butcher block requires generous applications of food-safe mineral oil every two to three months. This crucial step prevents the wood from drying out, cracking, or absorbing food odors.

Protect your countertops from extreme physical trauma. While granite and sintered stone resist heat exceptionally well, extreme temperature fluctuations can cause thermal shock, leading to deep structural cracks. Always place heavy cast-iron skillets and boiling pots on protective trivets or thick silicone heat pads rather than setting them directly on the cold stone. Use thick cutting boards for daily food prep. Dragging heavy serrated knives directly across the counter will ruin your knives and permanently score the surface resin of your beautiful quartz.
