Maintenance & Long-Term Care

Once you put in the hard work to transform your space, maintaining your painted ceiling ensures it continues to make the room feel bigger for years to come. Flat and eggshell paints—the most common sheen levels for overhead spaces—are relatively delicate and do not withstand aggressive scrubbing. You should rely on dry cleaning methods for routine maintenance. Wrap a clean, dry microfiber cloth around your extension pole and lightly sweep the ceiling every three to four months to remove dust and spiderwebs. Dust accumulation severely dampens a paint job’s Light Reflectance Value, making your bright ceiling look dingy and visually lower.

If you encounter a ceiling leak from a bathroom above or roof damage, you cannot simply paint over the resulting brown water stain with standard latex ceiling paint. The water stain will aggressively bleed through your fresh topcoat within days. You must first resolve the moisture issue, wait for the drywall to dry completely, and then seal the stain with an oil-based stain-blocking primer—such as those manufactured by KILZ or Zinsser. Once the oil-based primer dries, you can confidently touch up the spot with your leftover ceiling color, blending the edges into the surrounding area with a lightly loaded roller.
