Landscaping Mistake: Focusing too much on flowers

The problem with planting flowers exclusively is that they leave behind a lot of green once they bloom, making for a very dull landscape.

It’s better to plan your beds around attractive foliage so that once the flowers have wilted, shapes, foliar colors, and textures make your garden look just as beautiful through the rest of the season.

You can break up the bright green by planting silver, gold, dark, or variegated foliage varieties. Need some ideas? We love black lace elderberry, hostas, coleus, and heuchera.

You can also look for plants with fuzzy or lacy leaves, like lamb’s ear, Artemesia, and tri-color culinary sage.

Landscaping Mistake: Over-tending

You might not have guessed it, but sometimes, a strong blast from your garden hose is all it takes to solve your little pest problems. At least, that’s how pros attacked aphids that were overtaking roses. Insecticide will also obviously do the trick.

But unfortunately, when the bugs disappear, so do the butterflies! Over-tending when it’s not necessary is as damaging as ignoring a garden altogether.
