Lawn Care Tip: Water Sparingly

Most lawns and yards need about an inch of water a week, including rainfall. Watering more than that will unnecessarily hike up your water bill without enhancing your yard. It can be harmful, leading to fungus, heavier weed growth, and disease.

So how long should you be running your sprinklers to give your lawn that inch of water? A straightforward way to calculate it is to set a few empty cans around your yard.

Time how long it takes them to fill up about half an inch deep and run our sprinklers for that amount of time twice a week. You can make things easier by putting your sprinklers on a timer that automatically dispenses the right amount of water.

You should also schedule your watering in the cool morning hours to lose less water to evaporation. Sprinkler type and placement are also essential.

You’ll waste less with a sprinkler that dispenses more significant drops closer to the ground rather than sending a slight mist in the air. Try to get most of the water on the sunniest parts of your yard since those parts require more water than shaded places.

If you live in a spot that allows it, you can also use a rain barrel to save more on water. Simply put the barrel under one of your roof’s downspouts, and it’ll capture rainwater you can use later.
