#3 Must Do: Hang a Bird Feeder

You have probably guessed that this is the first step in being able to attract birds into your yard. No matter what type of bird you hope to attract, you will have to invest in both a feeder and some seeds. Given how most seeds are sold in bulk, it will not end up being too harsh on your budget, but depending on the feeder, you will have to pay a bit more than you would expect, yet generally under $20.

If you want to be able to do some bird watching, a platform bird feeder would be the best choice. If you are looking for an easier one to fill and clean, then a tube feeder would be more appropriate. The only caveat is that you will have to bust out that tool kit to assemble and install some of them.

Speaking of actual feed, cardinals are known to be very into black oil sunflower seeds, which are almost sure to attract a few of them. Other mixes that they enjoy include safflower, peanut hearts, sunflower seeds, and cracked corn!

If you have an outdoor cat, make sure you are not letting it out in the garden unsupervised. Cardinals are slow flyers, and when they eat fallen seeds from the ground, it can end up being deadly for them. Either way, it is better to keep your cats inside than outside. Also, when you settle on a place for your feeder, make sure that it is not too close to shrubs or other lush vegetation, as other predators could be hiding there.
