7 Furniture Styles Designers Are Loving Again

May 28, 2026 · Home
An infographic grid showing furniture restoration tools like a respirator, lead kit, and sander with their specific prices.
This checklist features essential restoration tools like sanders and wood glue to prep your favorite furniture pieces.

Tools, Materials, and Prep Checklist

Tackling a furniture restoration or integration project requires the right arsenal. Skimping on prep materials guarantees a sloppy finish. Gather these supplies before you move a single piece of heavy furniture into your workspace.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Protect your lungs and eyes. Purchase an N95 or P100 half-face respirator mask ($35) to block fine wood dust and chemical fumes. You also need heavy-duty nitrile gloves ($15) and wrap-around safety goggles ($10).

Lead Paint Testing Kit: Never sand vintage painted furniture without testing it first. Pick up an EPA-recognized swab kit ($15) to ensure the surface is safe to manipulate.

Abrasives and Power Tools: Buy a random orbital sander ($50-$80) to speed up flat-surface prep. Stock up on a multi-pack of hook-and-loop sanding discs ($20) in 80, 120, and 220 grits. For curved legs and intricate carvings, purchase flexible sanding sponges ($10).

Chemical Strippers and Solvents: Choose a citrus-based gel stripper ($20 per quart) for safe, indoor-friendly finish removal. You will also need mineral spirits ($12) to clean the wood grain after stripping.

Structural Adhesives and Hardware: Secure loose joints with high-quality interior wood glue ($8). Keep a set of trigger clamps ($30) on hand to hold pieces together while the adhesive cures. Buy replacement dowels and corner braces ($15) to reinforce wobbly chair legs.

Finishing Supplies: Depending on your chosen style, secure water-based polyurethane ($25 per quart) for a durable clear coat, or natural tung oil ($20) for a matte, organic finish. Use high-density foam brushes ($5) to prevent bristle marks.
