Tools, Materials, and Prep Checklist

Tackling these updates requires proper planning and the right supplies. Gather the following items before you begin your remodeling weekend. Shopping at local home centers or dedicated hardware suppliers ensures you have exactly what you need.

Essential Tools:

  • Drill and impact driver set (with assorted bits)
  • Non-contact voltage tester (crucial for electrical safety)
  • Wire strippers and linesman pliers
  • High-density foam paint rollers (4-inch) and synthetic bristle brushes
  • Random orbital sander with 120-grit and 220-grit sanding discs
  • Utility knife with fresh blades
  • Pry bar and putty knife
  • Drop cloths and heavy-duty painter’s tape

Project Materials:

  • Cabinet Paint and Primer: 1 gallon of high-adhesion bonding primer ($40 to $60) and 1 gallon of high-quality acrylic urethane cabinet enamel ($60 to $80).
  • Modern Hardware: Sleek bar pulls or simple knobs ($5 to $15 per unit, depending on the finish).
  • Lighting Replacements: LED flush mount fixtures or recessed retrofit kits ($30 to $80 per fixture).
  • Wall Repair: Spackling compound, drywall mud, and a sanding block for patching holes.
  • Degreaser: Trisodium phosphate (TSP) or a heavy-duty citrus degreaser ($10).
  • Electrical Supplies: Wire nuts, electrical tape, and a sturdy A-frame ladder.

Prep Checklist:

Clear your countertops completely. Empty the cabinets you plan to paint, storing your dishes in a separate room to avoid dust contamination. Tape off your floors, countertops, and appliances using heavy-duty builder’s paper and painter’s tape. Establish a dedicated work zone in your garage or backyard for sanding and painting cabinet doors. Preparation dictates the quality of your finish—never rush the cleaning and sanding phases.
