7 Surprising Colors That Works in South-Facing Rooms When Nothing Else Does

Maintenance & Long-Term Care

Protecting your investment in your newly painted south-facing room requires proactive maintenance. Intense ultraviolet light degrades paint binders and bleaches pigments over time, causing even the highest quality paints to fade prematurely. To combat this, keep your blinds or shades partially drawn during peak afternoon sunlight. You should also consider applying UV-blocking window films to your glass panes. These clear films reject up to 99 percent of damaging ultraviolet rays without noticeably darkening the room, preserving your vivid chalky charcoals and ink blues for years to come.

Cleaning matte and flat paint finishes requires a gentle touch. Unlike glossy paints, flat finishes can burnish; this means they develop permanent shiny patches when scrubbed too vigorously. When you notice a scuff mark or fingerprint, avoid harsh chemical cleaners and abrasive scrubbing sponges entirely. Instead, dampen a soft microfiber cloth with warm water and gently blot the stain. If water alone does not work, add a single drop of mild dish detergent to the cloth and lightly dab the area until the mark lifts away. Always rinse the spot with a clean, damp cloth to remove any lingering soap residue.

Perform a seasonal inspection of your walls, paying special attention to areas around window sills and baseboards where thermal expansion and contraction occur due to the sun’s heat. If you notice any hairline cracks in the caulk, slice out the old material with a utility knife and apply a fresh bead of acrylic latex caulk. Keep a small, airtight mason jar filled with your leftover paint stored in a climate-controlled area of your home for quick touch-ups. Label the jar clearly with the date, color name, and brand to ensure you always have the exact match available when life inevitably leaves a mark on your walls.
