7 Signs Your Plumber Tricks You into Spending More

4. He’s Making False Promises

Pragmatic homeowners would often choose to spend more money on top-quality materials so their new plumbing would last at least a decade. However, few know exactly what types of fittings, pipes, and other products constitute high quality. That’s exactly the opportunity dishonest plumbers rely on.

A professional may claim to be installing long-lasting PEX pipes and charge accordingly. In reality, you end up with a cheap substitute, such as PVC pipes, while the guy pockets the difference in price.

To ensure you get the quality you pay for, ask your guy for a list of the products he plans on using in your project. Then take the list and go to a plumbing supply store (or even a hardware store) and compare prices. Now, you can expect the plumber to keep some money for himself, but if you’re being charged significantly more than the cost of the product, approach him and ask why.

If the job is already done, compare what’s listed on your invoice with what products are actually in your plumbing system. If the invoice lists an American Standard or Kohler PEX valve but the valve in your shower is some other material or brand, call your guy to find out why.
