Mistake #2: Not Digging Wide Or Deep Enough

You would think that digging a hole would be child’s play, quite literally. But unfortunately for the young at heart, it’s nothing like that. If your soil is hard and rocky in certain places, then digging will turn out to be back-breaking work.

And because it’s so physically demanding, you’ll be tempted to do the bare minimum. This is what you should do instead: Dig your holes twice as wide as the pot your plant came in and twice as deep.

Make sure you add enough compost and mix it with some of the dug-up soil, and put it at the bottom of the hole, so the plant ends up being flush with the ground. Then fill in the sides of the hole with the rest of the compost and soil combination.

This will create looser soil encircling the plant, which helps air and water movement and guarantees that the roots can grow without any problems.
