#1 You Need Layers in Your Landscape

This may seem like it will clutter your yard, but if you do it knowingly, it is not going to look out of place, and you will have a greater variety of plants in your garden. Cardinals end up constructing their nests in shrubs, which are not only sturdy enough given their twiggy and dense structure but also protect them from bigger predators. These masterpieces take anywhere from 3 to 9 days to build, and they are made with four layers. This is why you need twigs, leaves, grasses, and bark in your garden.

If you want cardinals to choose your yard in order to build their nest there, you will need a combination of different types of plants so that they can find most of what they need close by. This means both plants that lose their foliage and also some that are evergreen too, as cardinals love to have those around come winter.

If you cluster together a few types of shrubs at the edge of the property or next to a fence, you cannot go wrong with it. And don’t you worry, we have the perfect types of shrubs you can plant on the list here as well!
